"Dr. Duck" Mayeux raises $450,000 for Ducks Unlimited; gains national spotlight

The President’s Top 100 are among Ducks Unlimited’s elite chapters throughout the nation. Every year, the list is reserved for the 100 chapters which raise the most grassroots dollars for DU's habitat conservation work. The Avoyelles Parish DU Chapter made the list as one of the organization’s highest fundraising chapters with more than $450,000 raised in one night, according to Avoyelles Chairman Dr. L.J. Mayeux.   

Two Avoyelles Women Arrested with 200 Illegal Pills

Avoyelles Parish Sheriff Doug Anderson said that his deputies have arrested Miosha Berry, age 37 of 6448 Baton Rouge Ave., Mansura, La. and Linda Henry, age 28 of 309 N.E. Main St., Bunkie, La. after finding 200 Loritab, a Schedule III controlled dangerous substance, on the pair. Sheriff Anderson stated that his Narcotics Section began a multi- state investigation into the pair allegedly purchasing and transporting the illegal narcotics from out of state into Avoyelles ready for street sale.

Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office Detectives have arrested Adam Laborde, age 19 of Mansura, La. and Dalton J. Laborde, age 17 of Marksville, La. charging the pair with the 1 count each of Simple Burglary after they allegedly burglarized the Don Dupuy Grocery in the Brouillette Community in late February. Forced entry was made into the business through the back door. Once inside the pair allegedly stole beer, cigarettes and liquor.

Catahoula Parish Single Car Crash Takes Life of 84-Year Old Woman

Earlier today, a single vehicle crash killed a woman from Clayton, LA.

Troopers responded to crash around 3:00 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 921 south of LA Hwy 15. The crash involved a 2004 Dodge pickup, driven by Mary M. Metcalf (W/F 84 yrs).

The Dodge was south bound on LA Hwy 921 when Metcalf lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. The vehicle then reentered the roadway and again exited the left side before colliding with a ditch.

Metcalf was not wearing her seatbelt and was pronounced dead.

Mansura promotes 150th birthday in Ville Platte

Mansura Mayor Kenneth Pickett and a group of residents from Avoyelles Parish were welcomed to Ville Platte by the Evangeline Parish Tourism Commission and Mayor Bill Jeanmard Wednesday, February 24.

Along with Mayor Pickett, Wilbert Carmouche, director of tourism for Avoyelles Parish, also made the trip.

Evangeline Parish will be celebrating its centennial next year, and the two parishes have a long history together. Evangeline Parish was carved out of north St. Landry and south Avoyelles parishes in 1911.

Dorothea Batiste, native of Marksville, running for Circuit Court Judge in Jefferson County, Alabama

Dorothea Batiste, native of Marksville, has announced her candidacy for Circuit Court Judge in Jefferson County, Alabama. She is a resident of Birmingham.

Batiste has been practicing law in Birmingham and Huntsville since 2003. She has a solo law practice, and works many types of law including family, criminal and probate.

The election is set for November 1. The two current judges are stepping down.
