African-American Heritage Festival to be held in Marksville Saturday

The Avoyelles African American Heritage Society will hold its 9th annual Avoyelles African American Cultural Heritage Day this Saturday. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bethune Community Center at 551 Martin Luther King Drive in Marksville.

Event coordinator Jeralyn Young said the day will be free and open to everyone.

“We will have activities for children and a free lunch of red beans and rice,” she said.

African-American culture exhibits will be set up inside the center during the day.

The Bethune Center Youth will perform a skit.

The hit film "Black Panther" will be shown after lunch.

The annual Black Pot Cook-Off, which usually takes place during the Heritage Day, will not be held this year, but will be one of the features in the 10th anniversary celebration in 2020.

“Next year will be one of the biggest celebrations to honor our 10th year of hosting Cultural Heritage Day,” Young said.
