LSUA student tests positive for Covid-19

Today, a member of the LSUA community reported a positive test for the novel coronavirus, the first such case at the university, according to LSUA Chancellor Paul Coreil who wrote the following email to students and faculty:

The individual is only enrolled in one on-campus course, does not live on campus, and has not been on campus since March 9. The student is currently in self-isolation and recovering well, which we are very pleased to hear. All of us offer our thoughts and good wishes to this student.

Even though we are social distancing and self-isolating, we are still one compassionate community and we stand together in hope that everyone continues to stay safe and follow all CDC guidelines.

Those who are known to have been in contact with the student are being notified. Please know that the CDC does not define simply being in the same office or building with someone who tests positive as “close contact.”

For almost two weeks now, classes have been suspended and the campus is currently on spring break. During this time, we have been deep cleaning all campus buildings and have increased the frequency of cleaning. And everyone can be assured that our wonderful custodial staff have thoroughly cleaned the relevant space in accordance with public health guidelines.

While the news of a positive case at LSUA is not unexpected given the number of cases now in the state, I know it is cause for concern. So, please continue to take care of yourselves and, if you feel ill, please immediately visit your primary care physician for further guidance. By practicing social distancing, washing your hands frequently, and avoiding travel everyone can significantly reduce the risk of spreading the virus. Please also take care of your loved ones – especially those who are older or have chronic health conditions – by avoiding those who are most at-risk and staying away from gatherings of more than 10 people.
