DONALDSONVILLE - A Mass of Christian Burial for Glynn A. Long will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Smokebend in Donaldsonville. Entombment to follow in the Ascension Catholic Church Mausoleum, Donaldsonville.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Smokebend, from 9 a.m. until the Mass at noon.
Glynn A. Long, retired Judge, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018, at the age of 90. He was born in Avoyelles Parish in the small town of Bunkie to parents, Joseph B. Long and Grace Voinche Long and in 1940 moved to Donaldsonville. In 1944 at the age of 16 he graduated as Valedictorian and enrolled at LSU. He gave up his student armed forces deferment and joined the United States Armed Forces. He was sent to the University of Illinois to study meteorology and upon completion he was sent to the U.S. 5th Air Force in the Pacific Theater. He served as a meteorologist during the occupation of Japan for two years. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal and entered LSU Law School where he graduated in January of 1950 as the youngest in his class. He opened a private law practice in 1950 in Donaldsonville at a time when Ascension Parish had only two lawyers. He was admitted to practice law in all Louisiana State and Federal Courts, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court.
He served as Director of War Veterans Adult Education in Ascension Parish for two years and also served for two years as Clerk in the Louisiana Senate under Gov. Earl K. Long’s Administration. He continued to serve his community as attorney for the Lafourche Parish Basin Levee District, the Town of Gonzales, the City of Donaldsonville, and the St. James Bridge and Ferry Authority.
His children, Kathy Long Clark, joined the firm as a Notary Public in 1978, Glynn A. “Sonny” Long, II, joined the practice in 1980 followed by Charles “Chuck” Long joining the firm in 1982.
Glynn loved the outdoors and raised hunting dogs. He spent hunting seasons chasing quail on the big tree line separating large cane farms with his Brittany spaniel bird dogs. From November through January in the 50’s and 60‘s he could be found in his duck blind on Blue Point Shoot in Grand Lake, spending the nights on his small houseboat “The African Queen.” In the 70s he could be found in his duck blind in Six Mile Lake and spending the nights on his infamous “Wonder-Y” Houseboat. In the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s he was duck hunting and alligator hunting in the marshes of Louisiana until he was 85 years old. Numerous stories could be told: One of his law school classmates, Pappy Triche, told one such story, when he and Glynn lived in the Tiger Stadium Dormitory. The entire dorm could hear Glynn practicing blowing his duck call all hours of the night and day. On Fridays in the winter, Glynns car could be seen in the student parking lot with his boat hooked up ready to take off after class to go duck hunting.
At a meeting in Governor Davis’s Office, having been inspired by the governor’s famous song, “You Are My Sunshine”, he suggested naming the new Mississippi bridge, “Sunshine Bridge” after the governor’s horse, Sunshine, and after the famous song written by Governor Davis. The committee approved the name unanimously. In 1991 he was elected Judge for the 23rd Judicial District and retired in 1997. Upon retirement he returned to private law practice with his son, Charles S. Long, and co-opened Riverside Title Agency in May 2000, with his daughter, Kathy Long Clark. As he gradually eased up on his busy law practice, Glynn focused more on gardening and became a Master Gardener in the Class of 2003.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Smith Long; parents, Joseph and Grace Voinche Long; son, Glynn A. “Sonny” Long; and brothers, Joseph C. Long and John M. Long.
Glynn leaves behind his wife, Nickie Long; daughter, Kathleen “Kathy” Long (Dr. Peter D.) Clark; son, Charles S. “Chuck” (Mary Weil) Long; granddaughter, Amy Elizabeth Clark; grandsons, Ian Charles Clark and Charles Spencer (Lauren Hotstream) Long, II; and two great granddaughters, Madeleine Mae and Lillian Grace Long.
Pallbearers will be Charles Spencer Long, II, Ian Charles Clark, James Long, Alan Robert, Michael Castrogavanni, Alex Defiore. Honorary Pallbearers will be Henry A. Truxillo and William C. “Bill” Crews.
